My compost bin tipped over in the rain last Tuesday in Portland

I came out to find all the food scraps spread across the lawn and stinking up the whole yard, so I dug a shallow trench with a spade and buried everything in layers with dry leaves, has anyone else tried trench composting after a bin disaster?

Burying deep works, @pat_moore tried that and the raccoons still won here. Ditched the bin, trenches forever.

Tuesday night here in Seattle, my bin did the exact same thing, so I FEEL this in my bones. I had a mess of eggshells and coffee grounds all over my ferns, it was brutal. Trench composting is honestly the only way I saved my sanity, I just dug a few holes in the veggie patch and buried it all with shredded newspaper. Took a solid two hours but now the worms are HAPPY and the smell is gone. Burying it deep enough is key, the raccoons dug up my first shallow attempt in one night. You did the right thing with the dry leaves, that really helps break it down faster.
