My wife wanted solar panels, I wanted a heat pump, and we flipped a coin over $6,800
We had about $6,800 set aside and could only do one. She pushed solar hard (she works from home, loves the idea of watching the meter spin backwards). I wanted a heat pump because our furnace is from 2007 and eats money all winter in Minneapolis.
We flipped a coin. Solar won. It got installed in April and here's the honest part: our electric bill dropped from around $140 to $30 a month, which feels great. But the furnace still kicks on in October and my gas bill is still $150+. So we solved half the problem and now we're saving up again for the other half.
I'm not mad about it, but I keep wondering if we did it backwards. Anyone else have to pick one upgrade over another? What did you go with first and would you do the same order again?
