Watched a guy at the Rockford flea market cut 3/8 plate on a homemade table, and now I get why everyone says the table matters more than the spindle
I was at the flea market in Rockford last Saturday just killing time and this older guy had a booth with a small plasma table he built himself, all welded square tube with rack and pinion on both sides. I stood there for like 20 minutes watching him cut brackets out of 3/8 plate and every single part came out clean with almost no dross on it, which blew my mind because my machine at home always leaves junk on the back side. I asked him what plasma cutter he runs and he laughed and said it was a $600 Everlast, way cheaper than what I figured he'd say. He told me the trick was the table itself, ground flat and stiff so the plate never moves or flexes while it cuts, and he spent 3 weekends getting the gantry square before he ever ran a part on it. I have been chasing cut quality with settings and consumables for a year and it never once crossed my mind that my flimsy table was the actual problem the whole time. I went home and checked my own table with a straightedge and the rails are off by almost 1/16 over 4 feet, which I guess explains a lot. Now I'm planning to tear the whole thing apart and rebuild it stiff, has anyone here gone down this road and how square did you get yours before it actually cut right?
