Hot take: I switched from CAM to hand coding on simple 2 axis parts and my scrap rate dropped
For the last 3 years I let the CAM software do everything, even a simple face and turn job that takes 2 minutes to write by hand. Last Tuesday I got a rush order for 40 aluminum spacers, nothing fancy, just OD and a bore, and I was waiting on the IT guy to fix a license issue on the CAM seat. So I wrote it out longhand at the control and ran the first part at 60 percent feed to check it. It came out dead on and I finished the run in under 4 hours with zero scrap, where my CAM programs on similiar parts usually eat 2 or 3 pcs from tool path stuff I never notice. I'm not saying toss the software, but for the simple 2 axis work I'm hand coding from here on. Curious how many of you still write it out at the machine vs letting the computer do it.
