TIL the old guy running the Bridgeport at my shop in Dayton taught me more in 20 minutes than a whole semester of trade school
Last Tuesday I was fighting a chatter problem on a 4140 steel part and this guy named Walt who has run the same mill since 1989 walked over and put his hand on the table. He said the spindle sounds like it is cutting a hair too deep and handed me a 0.015 shim to stick under the workpiece. Chatter went away on the first pass and I just stood there feeling dumb. He told me he learned that trick from a toolmaker in 1976 who used a cigarette pack to shim a job. What little tricks did you all pick up from the old timers at your shop that never made it into any manual?
