Guy at a meetup in Austin told me to skip tutorials and just build ugly things, and he was right
I was at a beginner coding meetup in Austin last month and some guy who'd been at it for two years told me he wasted his first six months just watching videos and never writing a line of his own code. He said to pick one dumb project, like a grocery list app or a dice roller, and just fight through it even if it looks terrible. I blew him off at first because tutorials feel safe and you get that little win every time. But I tried it, spent 11 days building a dumb tip calculator, and I learned more about how things actually break than in 40 hours of videos. My code is ugly and I still look stuff up every five minutes, but at least I know why things go wrong now instead of just copying. If you're stuck in tutorial land, what finally got you to close the tab and open a blank file?
