Pro tip: I logged 214 coffee bags over 2 years and just found out I only truly loved 11 of them
I started keeping a little notebook when I got into this about 2 years ago. Every bag, the roaster, the date, what I paid, and a quick note on whether I would buy it again. Hit 214 bags this past weekend and sat down to count the ones I actually marked as a rebuy. Eleven. Barely 5 percent. What got me is how many of the pricey ones landed in the "fine, no thanks" pile while a $14 bag from a tiny place up in Bellingham beat stuff I spent $26 on. The other thing was the tasting notes. I wrote "chocolate" on 60 something bags, so either I have a boring palate or half these roasters are just guessing. I am not mad about the money, it was fun, but it was a weird reality check on how much of this is hype. Does anyone else keep any kind of log, or am I the only weirdo with a coffee spreadsheet at this point?
Ha, I do the same thing but mine is just a note on my phone and it keeps me from buying the same "meh" beans twice. One thing that helped me was writing down what I actually tasted before reading the bag, because once I saw "dark chocolate" on the label everything started tasting like it. Also, 11 rebuys out of 214 is not bad at all, that just means you found your keepers the hard way.
