A guy at the DMV in Reno told me his diploma got him a $3 raise, then we both went quiet
We were waiting on number 47 at the Reno DMV when he mentioned his associate degree in drafting, and how the raise came out to about $40 a month after taxes. He said he still framed it, and I'm not sure if that made it better or worse. Curious if anyone here has hung a diploma on the wall and felt weird about it later.
That framed diploma on the wall becomes a weird thing to look at when the math doesn't work out. Forty bucks a month is a phone bill, maybe two tanks of gas. You hang it up because you're proud, then a year later you stare at it and do the math on what the degree actually cost versus what it brought in. A guy I know has his bachelor's in a frame that's worth more than the monthly bump it got him. At some point it stops being a trophy and turns into a reminder that the system sold you a story. The quiet in that DMV line probably said more than either of you wanted to admit out loud.
