I think everyone should stop telling 18 year olds to skip college and go to trade school
My nephew Marcus graduated from a trade program in Tucson last June and he still can't find full time work because every shop wants 3 to 5 years on the tools. My coworker keeps telling his own kid to skip college and go weld, but the starting pay at most places here is $17 an hour with no benefits. I'm not saying college is for everyone, I'm saying the trade school pitch is oversold and nobody mentions the wait time. Anyone here actually go the trade route and want to share how long it took to land steady work?
I did HVAC and got lucky because my uncle owned a shop, otherwise I'd have been in the same boat as Marcus. What finally worked for a buddy of mine was taking the $17 gig even though it sucked, then jumping ship after a year once he had real hours on his resume. The first job is just to get your foot in, the money comes later.
