My LCS owner said read the backup feature first, now I get why
For years I skipped backups, thought they were filler. Then Dave at Cosmic Corner Comics in Austin told me, "The backup is where the real story hides," and I laughed it off. Last month I picked up a run where the main plot dragged but the backup had a character detail that changed everything in issue 24. He was right about pacing too, reading that 8 page backup first made the whole issue click like a trailer for the main event. Anyone else got a shop owner whose advice you ignored until it bit you or saved you?
That bit about the backup being where the real story hides is dead on. My guy at the shop kept telling me to hit the recap page before diving into big crossover issues, and I blew him off for months. Finally tried it on a mess of an event book and the whole thing made sense, no more flipping back to figure out who was who. Now I read that page every time, even when I think I know the score. Turns out the old dudes behind the counter usually know what they're talking about.
