Checked my dive log after a 6 hour shift on the Mississippi, and number 500 was a full 12 foot vis day hauling silt. Not my deepest or toughest job, but I marked it with a sharpie and a terrible sketch of a turtle. Anyone else ever hit a round number on a boring job and feel weirdly proud?
you're putting a lot of weight on a number that only you care about. I mean, 500 dives is cool and all, but a logbook is just a record, not a trophy wall. the turtle sketch is the real story here, and even that sounds like something you did to pass the time. feeling proud of sticking with something is fine, but getting weirdly proud over hitting a round number on a random Tuesday feels like you're reaching for meaning where there isn't much. if it was 501 and you didn't notice, would you feel any different about your skills? probably not. so maybe the weird part is how much this tiny milestone is living in your head right now.
