Used to cut control joints with a chalk line and a helper yelling at me, now I just use a laser and nobody talks
Ten years back every joint I cut meant snapping chalk, measuring twice, and hoping my helper held the line straight while I ran the saw. Now I clamp a laser level to a stake, walk it once, and the line is dead on every time. Sounds great right, except I miss the yelling because it kept me sharp. Last month in Fort Wayne I cut 1,200 feet of 1/4 inch joints on a warehouse slab in one pass and never once checked a measurement by hand. Younger guys on the crew think the laser IS the job and they can't read a tape for nothing. But I've also watched a laser get bumped by a hose and nobody noticed until we had 40 feet of crooked cuts in cured concrete. So which is it, is the laser making us faster or just dumber, because I honestly can't tell anymore and I've been pouring for 22 years.
