My street in Baltimore looked completely different in 3 years and I think I know why
Three years ago my block had six older guys who all sat on their porches every evening, then one by one they either moved or passed away and now none of them are out there. What replaced them was wild because the city put in one of those little free libraries and suddenly the whole vibe shifted to younger folks walking dogs and nodding at each other instead of just sitting. I started keeping a note on my phone of how many people I actually talk to on my walk to the corner store and it went from like 2 a week to almost none. Here's the part that bugs me though, the block looks nicer on paper with new paint and plants but nobody actually knows each other anymore. Did your neighborhood go through this too or is it just a Baltimore thing?
That free library didn't kill your block, the timing just lined up that way and you're blaming the wrong thing. People stopped sitting on porches long before that, and younger folks walking dogs still nod and say hi even if you're not counting it. Your note on your phone might just be measuring your own mood more than the block.
