Overheard a banking exec's joke about ATM skimmers, now I check every machine
Last Tuesday at a coffee shop in Austin, this guy in a suit laughed about how easy it was to clone cards from gas station readers at night. He named a specific brand of skimmer that fits right over the card slot, and I've been tugging on every reader since. Has anyone else caught professionals slipping like that in public?
Three years ago I watched a guy in a Delta uniform at DFW airport tap his card on a reader that had a tiny blue light that didn't match the rest of the machine. I still yank on every pump handle and card slot like I'm testing a pull-up bar. My buddy thinks I'm paranoid until I showed him a YouTube video of a skimmer that fits so flush you need a flashlight to spot it. Now he checks the gas station pumps before we even get out of the car. Honestly it's become a weird hobby, like geocaching but with more financial dread.
