PSA: I mapped out every source in a moon landing hoax video and it took 40 minutes to find the original clip
Last Tuesday I sat down with a 20 minute YouTube video claiming the Apollo footage was shot in a studio, and I paused it at the 7 minute mark where the narrator says the flag shadow proves a stage light. Took me about 40 minutes of digging but I tracked the clip back to the raw NASA archive footage, and the "stage light" turns out to be a reflection off the lander leg, which you can see move as the camera pans. I posted both clips side by side with time stamps in the comments and the uploader actually replied, though he just said the archive footage itself was faked. My small win is that three people in that thread said they had never seen anyone actually check the source clip before. Does anyone have a good method for archive searching when the video has been re-uploaded and the original title is gone?
The part about the uploader just saying the archive footage itself was faked is the real story here. That move works because it can never be proven wrong, so the digging you did gets tossed out either way. One thing you could try is searching the Wayback Machine for the video ID instead of the title, since re-uploads often keep the same URL or show up in old snapshots with the real name attached. Also worth checking if the clip has any background audio like a phone ringing or a door, because those show up in other videos and can lead you back to the source. Your three people who never saw anyone check the source, that is the whole ballgame right there.
