Old foreman told me my foundations were "pretty but weak" and it stuck with me
About 10 years ago I was pouring a small retaining wall for a homeowner in Boulder. I was so focused on making the forms look perfect and the concrete finish smooth that I skimped on the rebar cage. The old foreman walked by, kicked the forms, and said "pretty but weak, that wall cracks in two winters." I had to rip out $800 worth of concrete and start over with the right reinforcement. Has anyone else had to eat a big mistake because someone called you out mid job?

Pretty but weak" basically sums up my entire approach to drywall patching before I learned better. I'd sand those things down to baby's butt smoothness but skip the mesh tape on the seams and wonder why everything cracked by spring. I'm pretty sure my old boss kept a running tab of how many times he had to point out my "pretty but spectacularly useless" work before I finally got it through my thick skull. The callout stings like hell in the moment but it's way cheaper than the alternative of pretending you didn't hear it.

Pretty but weak" hits hard because it's usually the opposite problem most of us have. I learned the hard way on a flagstone patio that looked rough but had a perfect base, and the homeowner actually thanked me later for not rushing the prep. In my experience, a callout like that saves you way more than the cost of fixing it early, even if it stings at the moment.
