Balayage used to mean foil city for me, now it's freehand only

Back in 2015 at my first salon in Austin, I would spend 90 minutes weaving foils for every balayage client. My hands would cramp and the lines always came out too harsh. Now I paint freehand with a paddle brush and it takes about 40 minutes total. The color melts way softer and my clients stopped asking for touch-ups so soon. Anyone else switch from foils to freehand and never look back?

Wait, you can actually get that soft of a melt without foils? I was always a foil loyalist because I thought freehand was just for lazy people. But honestly, seeing how much time you save and how much softer it grows out, I might have to try it on my next client. That's a game changer.
