Used to sketch out full character arcs before writing a word. Now I just vomit out a scene and see where it goes.
Back in 2017 I would spend 3 days building a backstory for every side character before even typing Chapter 1. Then I took a workshop in Austin where the instructor said 'nobody cares about your outline.' Changed my whole approach. Now I write a single emotional moment first and build everything else around it. Anyone else find their story quality actually went up after they stopped planning so much?

Same here, it's like the story breathes better when you let it just happen.

The 2nd chapter of my current WIP was originally 14 pages, but after I let it breathe like that, it ended up at 31 pages... @the_rowan, what was the moment in your own writing where you first realized letting go actually made the story better instead of worse? I had to scrap three whole scenes I was attached to before the rest started clicking.
