Thought those expensive cable testers were a rip-off, but I caved

For years I used a cheap $20 tester from Amazon and figured it did the job fine. Then last month I picked up a Fluke from a guy in St. Louis for $150, just to see what the fuss was about. Turns out my old tester missed a bad crimp on a customer's line that was causing intermittent signal drops. Anyone else get schooled by upgrading a tool they thought was fine?

Warning: That portfolio showcase event at the convention center last month changed how I organize my layers

I was at the Digital Art Expo in Dallas back in March. Set up my tablet to show some work on the big screen and my layers were a mess. Had 40 layers with names like 'layer 3 copy 5' and 'untitled'. Another artist next to me had everything grouped and named clean. His stuff looked way more professional just because it was organized. I spent the whole weekend embarrassed to let anyone scroll through my file. Now I name every layer and group before I even start drawing. Has anyone else had their file structure called out at a showcase?

My chocolate souffle actually rose this time and I don't know what I did differently

I've been trying to make chocolate souffle every Sunday for two months straight with nothing but flat, sad results. Last Saturday I changed nothing about my process and it came out perfect - tall, fluffy, and set just right. Did the universe just decide I had suffered enough or do souffles have a hidden switch I haven't found yet?

That time a small landlord changed my whole take on security deposits

I was doing some panel work in a duplex over in Woodbridge last spring, and the owner came down to talk. He's got maybe 8 units total, been renting for 20 years. He told me he started using a digital inspection app where you take photos and timestamp everything before a tenant moves in. Said it cut his deposit disputes down to near zero. I always figured small time landlords just wing it, but he showed me how he handled three separate move outs with no drama. Has anyone else seen this kind of shift with smaller property owners around Detroit?

That Saturday morning rush where I broke down 3 whole hogs in 2 hours flat completely flipped how I feel about working solo

Had a 8AM order for 12 pork shoulders and 20 racks of ribs drop in Friday night, showed up at 5AM Saturday and crushed it without a helper, now I actually look forward to those solo mornings when it gets crazy.

Caught my coworker saying he pays $30 a month for a secured card annual fee

Honestly I was just grabbing coffee in the break room and this guy from accounting was telling someone he pays $30 a year for a secured credit card. I asked him why not just get a free one from Discover or Capital One. He said he didn't know free secured cards existed. Ngl it made me wonder how many people are still paying fees on starter cards without realizing there are better options out there. Has anyone else run into grown adults not knowing about no-fee secured cards?

Got uninvited from a friend's book club for saying the wrong thing

I told a buddy's book club that I thought the author's take on cancel culture was overblown, and the next day the host said my 'energy didn't fit the vibe.' Lost out on 3 weeks of discussions and free snacks over one opinion. Learned real quick that some groups just want echo chambers, not actual debate.

PSA: Opted out of Target's data sharing and saw my coupon offers drop by half

I went into my Target account settings last month and unchecked all those boxes allowing them to share my purchase history with third parties. Figured it'd be a small privacy win, but now my Circle offers have gone from like 10-12 items down to maybe 4-5 each week. Honestly, it's wild how much your shopping data is tied to getting discounts, even at just one store in St. Louis. Has anyone else noticed their loyalty perks tank after tightening privacy controls?

Stopped using wire nuts for everything after a false alarm call last week

I always thought wire nuts were fine until I got a call about a false alarm at a condo in Arlington. Found two nuts loose inside the sensor box from vibration alone. Switched to wagos for all my low voltage connections now. Anybody else have better luck with push connectors on alarm circuits?

Ditched my gas leaf blower for an electric one. Actually works better.

I fought this for years. Thought electric yard tools were weak. But last month I finally caved after my neighbor let me try his Ego blower on my oak leaves. Cleared my whole driveway (about 30 feet) in 5 minutes. No fumes, no earplugs needed, and it didn't leave my arm numb from vibration. Bought one that same week. Anyone else swap out a gas tool and actually prefer the electric version?

Just walked into a drafting shop near downtown Phoenix

@brianreed nailed it with that Tempe story. My buddy had prints for a new chip fab facility done at a shop near the airport here. He walked in to pick them up and found his drawings sitting right next to the register where customers pay. Anyone could have snapped a picture while the clerk was on the phone. The firm he was doing the work for would have lost it if they knew. Took him a week to find a place that kept client stuff behind the counter and actually checked IDs before handing over a roll of drawings.

Unpopular opinion: Water from a well is better than storing city tap water in bombshelters

Haha yeah you got a point... my neighbor's well water in Weld County tasted sweeter than anything I've ever gotten from the tap. City water just has that weird chemical aftertaste no matter how much they test it.
