Friend told me to 'just be myself' on Hinge. Worst advice ever.

So my buddy Jake kept saying just act natural and don't overthink it. Took his advice on a date last week with this girl from Hinge. I spent 20 minutes ranting about my vinyl collection and she literally yawned in my face. Has anyone else had a friend give terrible dating advice that blew up in their face?

Yeah the "just be yourself" advice is basically a trap unless you already know how to read a room. Try having a few backup topics ready that aren't your whole personality.

...and honestly, having a few go-to topics saved my hide more times than I care to count. I used to show up and just hope the conversation would carry itself, and it never did. You don't need to be an expert on anything, just have three or four things you can talk about without getting stuck. Stuff like a show you're watching, a hobby you actually do, or even just something funny that happened recently. That way you're not scrambling for words and you can actually pay attention to what other people are saying instead of panicking.
