That one guy who brought his mom to our first date in Austin convinced me to always ask about living situations first.
He showed up with her at the coffee shop and said, 'Mom wanted to see if you're nice,' and I just sat there for 45 minutes while she interviewed me about my job and my credit score, so now I always ask 'who lives with you' before I agree to meet someone, has anyone else dealt with a parent tagging along?

That "just there to grab a drink" dad move is wild, but I'd argue the cringiest tag-along is a friend hiding in the corner to "watch" the date unfold without saying a word.

Tbh your buddy's dad story reminded me of something that happened to my friend Sarah last year. She set up this coffee date with a guy she met at trivia night, everything was going fine until his college roommate walked in and just sat at the table next to them without saying a word. The guy pretended not to notice, but Sarah caught him glancing over every two minutes like he was waiting for a signal or something. After twenty minutes of this weird silent auction bull, she finally asked if he knew that person and he tried to play it off like a total stranger. The roommate eventually got up and left without even ordering anything, which made it even more obvious that he was there just to scope her out. She left right after that and never texted the guy back, honestly I don't blame her one bit.

Hold up, I gotta gently push back on the idea that only a mom would do this. It's usually the mom, sure, but I've seen dads pull the same thing just with a different vibe. They don't ask about your credit score, they just sit there giving you the silent stare-down while you try to make small talk. Had a buddy tell me his date's dad showed up at the restaurant just to "grab a drink" and ended up staying the whole meal giving him life advice. So you might want to broaden your question to "who's gonna show up on our date without warning," because it's not always a mom. What's the weirdest tag-along you've heard about?
