A deepfake app flooded my inbox with spam, here's what I do now

I downloaded a free app to create a deepfake video for fun. It asked for access to my contacts and camera roll. After that, my email was full of spam and odd messages. Now I always look at the app's required permissions and skim user reviews before downloading anything similar.

Ugh, my friend got hit with something similar. He clicked one of those "see yourself as a movie star" links on social media. Next thing he knows, his phone is blowing up with weird texts. He had to change his number, total nightmare. He didn't check what it wanted to access at all. Now he's super paranoid about any app asking for his contacts. Really shows you gotta watch those permissions.

Used to skip reviews (silly me), but this changed my tune.

Oh man, @blair_ward39's story is exactly why! That stuff is no joke. I read every single permission now and if it feels off, I just delete the app. It takes two seconds to check and can save you a huge headache. Reviews tell you what real people went through, not just what the app promises. Never skipping them again!

Wait, it asked for your whole camera roll? That's wild.
