Gas station guy pointed out a deepfake of me and I froze

Last month I was at a 7-Eleven in Mesa buying a soda when the clerk behind the counter said hey I saw you online yesterday. He pulled up his phone and it was me talking about something I never said, mouth moving perfect and everything. I stood there for a solid 10 seconds not knowing if I should laugh or be scared. Has anyone here had a stranger show them a deepfake of themselves like that?

God that is SO creepy. The fact that he just casually showed it to you like it was nothing makes it even worse. I had something similar happen at a coffee shop in Tempe last year where a barista recognized me from a fake video that was going around. I didn't know what to say either. You're just standing there while your own face is lying for you. It feels like someone stole a piece of your identity and there's nothing you can do about it.

Yeah but here's the thing nobody talks about. These deepfakes aren't just embarrassing, they're basically permanent now since anyone can save and reupload them before the original gets taken down. How do we even prove it wasn't us when the video looks this real?
