Showerthought: That deepfake memorial has me torn
Everyone says deepfakes are always bad, but seeing one made to honor a lost loved one made me stop and think. It's not so simple when it helps people grieve.

But doesn't the intent change things?

Honestly I used to think intent was everything too. But after seeing some of these cases where people plan things out for months, it feels like a totally different kind of wrong. If you have time to think it over and still go through with it, that's not a mistake, that's a choice. The punishment should fit the choice, not just the outcome.

In the Johnson case from 2022, the defendant admitted to planning the whole thing for months. It's shocking that the judge still gave the same sentence as if it was an accident. They had emails and texts showing clear premeditation. How does intent not change the penalty in a situation like that?

Those texts Cora mentioned basically spelled it out.
