That fake Tom Cruise video from last Wednesday wrecked my brain

My buddy sent me a clip of Tom Cruise doing magic tricks in a living room. I watched it 4 times before I spotted the weird shadow under his chin. Has anyone else had a moment where a deepfake just felt too real for a second?

Yeah, the shadow thing is a dead giveaway once you know to look for it. But the trouble is most people are just watching on their phones and not really studying it frame by frame. They're also getting so good at the lighting and skin texture now that the old tells don't work as well. I swear the next wave of these things is gonna have people questioning real videos too. That's when it gets really scary.

I was just reading an article that said most people can't spot deepfakes anymore unless they really slow down and look at the details. That shadow thing is exactly the kind of tell they mentioned.
