Vent: A friend told me my newsletter subject lines were 'spammy' and it stung, but they were right.
They said 'your clickbait makes me not want to open anything, even the good stuff', so I switched to just stating the main benefit clearly. Anyone else get a piece of feedback that made you completely rework a basic habit?

What's the actual goal of a subject line though? It's not just to get a click, it's to get the right person to open it. If you trick someone with spammy words, they'll just feel annoyed and leave. Being clear means the people who really want your stuff will open it and actually read it.

Ugh, I used to think more mystery in a headline was better. A friend told me my blog titles were confusing and it totally flipped my view. Now I just say what the post is about.

Totally get why your friend said that, but I still like a little mystery. If a headline just says exactly what's in the post, I often won't click because I feel like I already got the point. A good title should make me curious enough to open it and find out more. It's a balance, sure, but I don't think being totally plain is always the answer.
