My laptop hinge snapped mid-call in a Chiang Mai cafe

Last Wednesday I was on a Zoom call with a client in Seattle and the right hinge on my 3 year old Dell XPS just gave out. Screen flopped back and I had to finish the call holding it up with my coffee mug. Found a repair shop on Nimmanhaemin Road that fixed it for 1200 baht, but the whole thing made me realize I should probably back up my SSD more often. Anybody else have a laptop part fail while you were working remotely?

Oh man, that's rough. I had the exact same thing happen with my old Lenovo while I was in a co-working space in Ho Chi Minh City - the screen just gave up and I had to prop it against the wall for the rest of the day. Did the repair hold up okay or did you have to baby it afterwards?

lol yeah it held up but I had to treat it like a fragile baby for a solid month. Basically every time I closed the lid I held my breath and whispered "please don't crack." Three weeks later the hinge gave out and I just taped the whole thing together like a monster.

Funny you mention the tape thing, because that's exactly what I ended up doing with my old HP Spectre after the hinge cracked the third time. The repair shop in Chiang Mai did a solid job, but I swear those hinges are designed to fail eventually. If you're still using that taped up monster, maybe look into one of those little laptop stands that holds the screen at an angle so it doesn't put pressure on the hinge. Kept mine going for another six months before I gave up and replaced it.
