Talked to a guy at a hostel in Medellin last week who made me question my whole setup

He said he's been working from a hammock on a beach in Colombia for 6 months, making $4k a month with just a cheap tablet and a mobile hotspot. Made me wonder if I'm just loading myself down with gear for no reason.

I finally stopped believing the coworking space hype after 6 months in Chiang Mai

For the longest time I bought into the idea that you absolutely need a dedicated coworking space to be productive as a digital nomad. Then I spent a month working from a quiet cafe near the Old City, just a 30 baht iced coffee and my noise-cancelling headphones, and got more done than any month at a desk rental. People act like you'll fail without structured workspace but half those spots are just loud Instagram shoot setups anyway. What's your setup for getting work done on the road, cafe or dedicated desk?

Overheard a nomad say he books hostels for 2 weeks minimum now

Was at a co-working spot in Medellin last month and this guy mentioned he never books less than 14 days anywhere anymore. Said it saves him like 30% on nightly rates plus he gets a better spot in the room. I usually bounce around every 4 or 5 days but maybe I am losing money on that. Anyone else do longer stays to cut costs?

I was working from a beach in Koh Lanta last month and my hostel wifi kept dropping at 3pm every day during client calls. Got told my WiFi setup was the reason I keep losing work...

A guy in a co-working space in Chiang Mai pointed out my laptop was connecting to the 2.4GHz band instead of 5GHz... said that's why my uploads were crawling. Switched it after he showed me and it cut my file upload time from 8 minutes down to 2. Anyone else find their digital nomad setup has a hidden bottleneck like that?

I used to write full paragraphs explaining every issue, but after she said that I switched to bullet points with max 3 lines. Now people actually reply to me within an hour instead of ignoring it. I was tired of squinting at my laptop screen in cafes in Chiang Mai so I grabbed one of those cheap USB-C monitors off Shopee. Spent 3 months trying to get a reliable SIM card in Bangkok

I kept buying tourist SIMs that throttled after 10GB, then tried a local carrier plan that needed Thai ID. Ended up taking 4 trips to the shopping mall and 2 hours of paperwork to get a proper prepaid card. Has anyone else dealt with that mess?

Overheard a guy at a coworking space in Medellín say coworking spaces make you less productive, so I started working from coffee shops for a month and here is what I think

I saw this guy in a hammock with his laptop arguing that the forced socializing at coworking spaces kills deep work, but I found coffee shops too loud and unreliable for power, so is the real trick a mix of both or am I missing something?

Lost a $200 monthly gig because I booked a co-working space with bad WiFi in Medellin

Last month I took a client meeting from a trendy co-working spot in El Poblado. Looked great on Instagram but the upload speed was under 2 Mbps. Video call kept dropping and they said I seemed unprofessional. Now I always test the connection with a speed test before booking any space. Has anyone else had a client relationship fall apart over something like bad internet?

Had a call with a retired nomad who lived in a van for 12 years

He told me he stopped chasing internet speeds after year 3 and just started picking places based on good bakeries. Says he saved about $800 a month after he quit worrying about coworking spaces. Anybody else find that the constant hunt for fast WiFi actually takes away from the travel part?

Decided between a hammock and a hostel bed in Bangkok

Last month I was in Bangkok. Had to choose. Hammock on a rooftop hostel for $5 a night or a real bed in a shared room for $12. Picked the hammock. Big mistake. Woke up covered in mosquito bites and my back was wrecked for 3 days. Couldn't work from my laptop at all. Had to buy a neck brace at a pharmacy. Anyone else cheap out on accommodation and regret it?

Chose a homestay over a coworking coliving space in Medellin and it actually worked out better

Everyone told me to book one of those digital nomad coliving spots in El Poblado with the fast WiFi and networking events. I went with a local family homestay in Envigado instead for $350 a month. Got way better Spanish practice from abuela yelling at me about my schedule and the internet was fine for Zoom calls. Anyone else skip the trendy spots and do something different?

Realized I was working from coffeeshop WiFi without a VPN for 6 months after getting a weird login alert from my bank.

It clicked when I saw a login attempt from a city I'd never even visited and suddenly remembered all those airport and hostel networks I'd been connecting to like an idiot... has anyone else had this wake-up call with their roaming setup?

Rant: That "just use a coworking space" advice was garbage for me

My buddy Dave kept saying I needed to rent a desk at WeWork to stay focused. I tried it for 3 months in Chiang Mai and spent $450 total. Turns out I hate the open office noise and small talk even more than my crappy hostel wifi. Now I work from coffee shops or my room with noise cancelling earbuds and get way more done. Has anyone else found coworking spaces overrated or am I just antisocial?

My laptop hinge snapped mid-call in a Chiang Mai cafe

Last Wednesday I was on a Zoom call with a client in Seattle and the right hinge on my 3 year old Dell XPS just gave out. Screen flopped back and I had to finish the call holding it up with my coffee mug. Found a repair shop on Nimmanhaemin Road that fixed it for 1200 baht, but the whole thing made me realize I should probably back up my SSD more often. Anybody else have a laptop part fail while you were working remotely?

I spent 2 years bouncing between coffee shops in Chiang Mai thinking coworking was a rip off at $150 a month. Three weeks ago I finally caved and joined one near the old city and my output literally doubled just from having a proper desk and reliable wifi.
