Back in 2010 I laughed at my buddy for using a VPN just to check his email.
Now I pay for one myself after seeing my ISP sell my browsing history to a data broker in Ohio last year. Anyone else have a moment that flipped their view on a privacy tool?

That ISP story is a real wake-up call. What did they actually sell, like a list of every site you visited? Makes you wonder what else they're doing that we just don't know about yet.

Yeah, and like @leewalker said, it makes you wonder what else they are doing. My worry is that it is not just about selling a list of sites. They can build a whole profile on you, guessing your habits and even your health issues from that data. It feels like we went from no one caring to having to guard every click. That is why I finally got a VPN, just too much invisible stuff happening.

My buddy's targeted ads got so specific they knew about his knee surgery before his own family.
