Just learned my brake cables were 3 years overdue for replacement
I was checking over my bike last night before a ride and noticed some rust spots on the cables near the calipers. Decided to pull up the Park Tool guide on cable wear and found out most brake cables start losing strength after 12-18 months of regular riding. I've had these on since I built the bike up in 2021. That's like 3 years of commuting and weekend rides on cables that could snap at any time. Anyone else forget to check their cables until something goes wrong?

Man, I once rode with a frayed derailleur cable for like six months before it finally snapped in the middle of a hill.

Honestly, six months is wild. That cable must've been hanging on by like three strands the whole time. Ngl, I'm surprised it didn't snap on a bumpy road way before you hit that hill. That's some serious luck right there.

Six months, huh? That's playing with fire for way too long (no pun intended).
