Question about a patio door swap that got awkward with visitors

I was taking out my old patio door when my aunt and uncle dropped in unexpectedly. The new door was supposed to slide right in, but it was stuck halfway. My uncle offered to hold it while I fiddled with the hinges, and he lost his grip. The door tipped and scared their little dog, who started barking like crazy. How do you handle DIY with people around without it turning into a circus?

Honestly, was there a bigger issue with the door fit, or was it purely the surprise audience that threw things off? That pressure to not look clumsy in front of family can totally warp a simple job. I've definitely rushed and made dumb mistakes when people popped by to "help.

I read somewhere about the spotlight effect making people mess up simple tasks when watched, which totally fits what @flores.lisa said about family pressure making you rush.

The "pressure to not look clumsy" that @flores.lisa talks about... I get it, but is it really that deep? Stuff falls over, dogs bark. It's a door, not open heart surgery. We've all been there trying to hang a picture with someone watching and suddenly you forget how a level works. It's just a funny story now, not some big psychological thing.

Ever notice how many normal tasks turn into a performance? Like parallel parking when someone's waiting, or cooking while guests chat in the kitchen. That spotlight effect @alice602 mentioned is real. It's not about the door or the picture. It's the feeling of being judged on dumb little things that should be easy. Makes you fumble keys, spill coffee, all that.
