Rant: neighbor's composting toilet stinks up the whole property
Visited a friend's off grid setup in northern Vermont last month and their composting toilet had this awful smell seeping out of the ventilation pipe. They said it was a $200 model from a big box store and they didn't add enough carbon material. Has anyone else had trouble with cheap composting toilets in humid areas?

Wait, only two hundred bucks? I can't believe they cheaped out that bad.

Whoa hold up, I gotta push back a little here. Two hundred bucks is actually pretty solid for a basic phone if you're just making calls, texting, and using a couple apps. I've seen people pay like 400 for a midrange Android that lags after a year, so 200 seems like a fair deal for something that actually works.

My buddy Tom built a cabin in the PNW last year and got one of those cheap composting toilets too. He thought he was being smart saving money but after a few weeks the whole place smelled like a barn. He kept adding more sawdust and peat moss like the manual said but the humidity there just made everything wet and gross. Finally he had to rip the whole thing out and build his own setup with a bigger fan and a separate drying chamber. That $200 model ended up costing him like $600 in time and materials to fix.
