TIL soaking cedar fence posts in used motor oil for 24 hours before setting them adds years of rot resistance
An old rancher up near Flagstaff mentioned this trick while I was trimming his doodle last month, and after digging into it, the oil just seals the wood fibers deep. Has anyone else tried this or got a better method for preserving fence posts on a budget?

And they're absolutely right about that motor oil trick. I did the same thing about eight years back on a run of posts for a horse paddock. Soaked em in a tub of old diesel and oil from my tractor for a solid day before setting them in concrete. Not a single one has rotted at the ground line yet, even after some real wet seasons. The wood just gets hard as iron after that. If you want to go even cheaper, some guys I know just paint the bottom few feet with straight used oil every couple years and get the same result.

My dad tried that on a fence line back in '92... still standing somehow.
