Heard a kid at the park explain why his dog barks at the sky

I was walking my own dog in Green Lake Park yesterday and this little boy, maybe 5, told his mom the dog was barking because 'the sky people are checking their maps.' His mom just nodded and said 'maybe.' It was so simple and sure, it made me wonder why we need all the complicated government talk. What's the weirdest thing you've overheard that made you pause about this stuff?

Just realized I've been overcomplicating fridge door gasket replacements for years

I used to fight with the whole panel and clips for an hour, but a tech in Dayton showed me you can just warm the new gasket with a hair dryer for 2 minutes and it slips right on. Anyone have a better trick for those stubborn older models?

TIL I was fighting the wrong battle with my resume for two years

I spent a long time trying to make my resume look perfect for people, adding fancy layouts and long descriptions of my old retail jobs. Last week, a friend who works in HR told me most big companies use AI to scan resumes first. She said my pretty resume was probably getting tossed before a human ever saw it because the software couldn't read the format. That was the moment I realized I was doing it wrong. I was trying to impress a person, but I needed to get past a robot first. I spent a day redoing it with simple headings and plain text, focusing on keywords from the job ads. It felt weird to write for a machine, but it makes sense now. Has anyone else had to completely change how they apply for jobs because of this?

Got my first solo crane removal done in Tacoma last Friday

I was up in this 80 foot Douglas fir, had to take it down piece by piece over a garage. The crane operator, this older guy named Ray, told me to just talk him through each cut like we were having a normal chat. I kept saying 'okay, coming your way' and 'got it' instead of getting all technical, and it went so smooth. We had the whole thing on the ground in like 4 hours with zero damage. Anyone else find that keeping the radio talk simple makes a huge difference?

My professor told me to ignore the surface scatter at the new site, but I found a complete Bronze Age awl 2 inches down.

He said the top layer was just modern farm debris, but after his team left, I did a quick probe in the same spot and pulled out a perfectly preserved copper tool from about 1500 BCE, so who's the amateur now?

Update: I finally figured out why my core box was sticking every single pour

Last month in the middle of a big run of gray iron castings, I realized the issue was the damn humidity in the shop. My old binder mix was fine in winter, but the summer air was messing with the curing. Anyone else have to switch up their sand mix seasonally?

Update: I think the push for full 3D modeling on every small job is a waste of time

I was working on a simple deck addition in Tacoma last week. The client just wanted a basic permit set. I spent 6 hours building a full 3D model, which the city reviewer didn't even open. They only looked at the 2D plan views and the span tables. For a straightforward job like that, a detailed 2D draft with clear notes got it approved just as fast. I see a lot of people saying you need to model everything now, but for small residential work, it often doesn't add value for the client or the plan check. Has anyone else found that simpler drafting gets the job done faster on certain projects?

The time I used a kitchen spatula for a stubborn extraction

Okay, so this is going to sound nuts, but hear me out. I had a client last month with a deep, stubborn blackhead on her nose that just would NOT budge with my regular tools. I was about to give up after three tries, and she was getting frustrated. In a moment of pure desperation, I grabbed a clean, brand new silicone kitchen spatula from my drawer. I gently pressed the flat, flexible edge around the pore, and I swear on my license, the thing popped right out cleanly with zero trauma. My client and I just stared at each other and burst out laughing. It was the weirdest, most effective hack I've ever stumbled upon. I'm not saying I'm adding it to my official kit, but has anyone else ever used a totally random object in a pinch that actually worked?

PSA: My sourdough starter was a pet rock for a solid year

I only realized my mistake when a friend asked to see my 'bubbly' starter and I showed her a jar of silent, booze-smelling paste. Turns out I'd been using chlorinated tap water from the start, which was killing the wild yeast. Anyone else have a basic step they completely missed for ages?
