That week I hid a GoPro in a fake rock and a raccoon stole it
I spent last Tuesday building a pretty convincing fake rock housing for a GoPro to watch who kept messing with my backyard shed, but a raccoon actually dragged the whole thing into the bushes that night. Got back some hilarious footage of him chewing on the lens before I found it half buried near the fence line 3 days later. Is this just bad luck or do animals always screw up DIY cams more than people do?

Wild animals are way more curious and stubborn than people give them credit for, so it's not really bad luck - you just underestimated how nosy raccoons actually are. A fake rock is a smart idea but raccoons are basically tiny bears with hands, they're gonna investigate anything new in their territory no matter how well hidden. Better to mount the cam higher up on a fence post or tree branch where they can't just drag it off to snack on.

Is losing one trail cam really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things?

Yeah @davidkim but raccoons are basically tiny furry thieves, they'll steal anything.
