Heard a guy at the auction say 'just rasp it flat' for a bad quarter crack

I was really skeptical about that quick fix, but a vet in Lexington showed me a case where they used a pour-in acrylic patch after proper cleaning. The horse was back to light work in 8 weeks with no issues. Made me rethink some of the old 'just trim it out' advice I got early on. Has anyone else had good results with those newer patch materials?

My first year as a farrier, I tried to trim out every single crack I saw. The acrylic patches are a total game changer for saving hoof wall. I wish I had known about them sooner.

You see that same thing with quarter cracks on racehorses. Trying to chase them out just makes the hoof wall weaker over time. A good patch lets the crack grow down while keeping the horse sound. It's about working with the hoof instead of fighting it.

What's the actual failure rate for those patches after a year?
