Just compared my old pickle crock to a modern airlock setup

The crock from my grandma always gave me moldy batches, but switching to a simple glass jar with a water seal last year changed everything. I haven't lost a single batch of kraut in 8 months. Does anyone have a favorite brand for those little airlock lids?

Oh, that's such a familiar story. My great aunt's crock was the same way, a total mold factory. I've had great luck with the basic plastic airlock lids from a brand called Fermentology. They're cheap and they just work.

Have you tried the water seal lids from the hardware store?

Hardware store fixes are classic, like using duct tape for everything.

My great aunt's crock had that same thick white mold layer every time. Those Fermentology lids you mentioned, are they the kind that fit on regular wide mouth mason jars? I've been using the silicone waterless ones but they still let in too much air.
