My friend in Denver got let go for a joke he made about his own company's product

He was a graphic designer for a local brewery and posted a meme on his private account about a beer can design he thought was ugly. It was clearly his personal opinion and tagged no one. Two days later, his boss called him in and said the post was 'brand damage' and they had to part ways. I think it's wrong to fire someone for a personal opinion shared off the clock, even if it's about your work. Has anyone else seen a case like this where the post was just a critique, not an attack?

Is it really a private account if his boss saw it? That's the first thing that makes me see this differently. When you work for a brand, especially a small local one, calling their product ugly online is a choice with clear risks.

Yeah, that's the part that gets me. Even on a private account, you're still putting that opinion out into the world. It feels like there's just no safe space to vent anymore without it possibly coming back on you.

Even private posts can still cost you your job these days.
