I finally bought a $150 laser level for my ceiling project

Used it to map out where the light fixtures go on my flat ceiling and it was spot on. Has anyone else used one for checking if their floor is truly level in a house built on a slab?

Hold on a second, I wouldn't completely trust a laser level for checking a slab floor. In my experience, those things are great for measuring relative height across a room, but they don't tell you if the slab itself is truly flat or just following the original pour. A house slab can have a slight crown or dip that's been there since day one and a laser level will just show that as "level" if you set it to match. You'd be better off using a long straight edge, like a 6 or 8 foot level, to see if the floor actually dips or humps across a short span. That old school method will catch out-of-flat conditions a laser level can totally miss.

Yeah that straight edge trick has saved me more than once on slabs I thought were fine with just a laser.

It's funny how often the fancy new tool just confirms what the old school method could have told you faster. Kind of like how people buy smart thermostats but still end up just walking over to adjust it manually.
