Overheard a guy at the hardware store say he never sands before applying shellac

He claimed the alcohol in the shellac bites into raw wood just fine, so I tried it on a small pine box. Anyone else skip the sanding step for shellac, or is that asking for trouble?

Saw the same thing happen on a maple tabletop last year. The finish looked okay at first but started peeling in less than a month. That guy is giving out some truly bad advice.

Wait, is skipping sanding REALLY that big of a deal? Shellac is pretty forgiving stuff.

Skipping sanding, Nancy? Let's just say I've seen better finishes on a tree stump.

Oh man, that reminds me... I tried that shortcut once on a little jewelry box back in '09. Looked smooth as glass for like two weeks then started flaking off in these weird little curls.
