My buddy swore his new smart scale changed his life, but the numbers just made him crazy
I was over at my friend Mike's place about a month ago, and he made me look at his new $150 'connected' bathroom scale. He was going on and on about how it syncs to an app and tracks body fat percentage and muscle mass. He pulled up the graph on his phone and got genuinely upset, pointing at a tiny dip and saying, 'See? I drank two beers last night and my body water is off by 0.3%.' The thing is, he looked exactly the same as he did three weeks prior. He spent the next twenty minutes talking about the data instead of just, you know, living. It happened right there in his bathroom. Now he checks it every single morning and it dictates his whole mood. Has anyone else seen a friend get totally obsessed with a gadget's data to the point it seems to do more harm than good?

Been there. You gotta just ignore the first hour he's awake, it's a total write-off. Mood swings like a pendulum until the coffee kicks in.

Oh come on, the guy had a minor freakout over a 0.3% change in his body water. That's not a life-ruining obsession, that's just being a little too into a new toy. People get hype about all sorts of stuff for a week or two then move on. My cousin bought a heart rate monitor for running and checked it after every single jog for a month, now it's sitting in a drawer somewhere. Unless Mike is literally crying on the bathroom floor over a decimal point, it's probably just a phase. Losing sleep over a friend's temporary gadget phase seems like a bigger problem than the gadget itself.
