Talked to a concrete guy at Home Depot last weekend

He saw me loading bags of self-leveling compound and asked what floor thickness I was shooting for. When I said a quarter inch he laughed and said I'd be grinding it all back off within a year. Is there a standard minimum thickness people actually use for garage floors?

I helped a buddy pour his garage floor last spring and we went with a half inch using 4000 psi mix with fiber mesh. It's been through a few freeze-thaw cycles and some heavy tool drops and there's not a single crack yet. I think that quarter inch thing is overblown honestly like if you prep the concrete right and keep the water ratio low you can get away with thinner pours than people think. The trick is controlling the cure not just throwing more material at it. A lot of guys pour thick because they rush the process and hope the extra concrete covers their mistakes.

Ask him what psi mix he pours for his garage floors. Most guys use 3500 psi but that cracks at quarter inch no matter what you do.

Building on that "quarter inch no matter what you do" part - have you actually tried fiber mesh in the mix to hold those micro cracks together, or is that just a bandaid fix in your experience?
