My dad insisted on putting the water heater in the garage instead of the attic, and after our pipes froze last winter, I owe him an apology.
He said it would save us from a major repair down the line, and sure enough, the attic unit in our neighbor's identical house burst during a cold snap in Charlotte, causing over $5,000 in water damage.

Used to think that was silly, but now I get it.

Save the cash for something he actually wants. A dinner is nice, but it's over in a night. That money could go towards a new tool for his hobby or a weekend trip. Feels more meaningful to me.
