I switched to outcome-based pay and my shop's output got sharper

Many in our field think hourly pay is the only fair way. But linking pay to finished jobs has my team taking more time and care with each piece. We see fewer mistakes and happier customers now.

My buddy's garage tried this and the techs started checking their own work way more. @jessica14, they found the same thing, less rushing meant fewer comebacks.

We switched to a per-job pay system last year and saw the same change. Mechanics started double-checking bolts and test driving every repair. Our comeback rate dropped by half because nobody wants to waste their own time fixing a mistake. It built a different kind of team culture where quality actually matters to the person doing the work.

Exactly, everyone assumes piecework means a rush job, but it flips when your paycheck depends on the thing being done right the first time. If you get paid per finished job, a comeback or a fix eats your own time and money, so you check your work. It makes the whole team care more about quality because a mistake hurts everyone, not just the boss. Suddenly you're all focused on getting it perfect, not just fast.

Wait, they actually take more time now? That's the complete opposite of what everyone says happens with piecework.
