The day I found a rusty penny in my couch changed my penny hunting results
I was digging between the cushions at a bus stop on Main Street last Tuesday and pulled out a 1943 steel penny coated in rust. That got me thinking about where I should actually be looking, so I started hitting old bus stations and thrift store drop boxes instead of parking lots and vending machines. Has anyone else found that changing your search spots improves your rare coin finds?

1943 steel cent rusted? I found one under a gas station pay phone last fall.

That "under a pay phone" detail is pretty wild. Those steel cents do rust easier than regular ones because of the zinc coating. Still a cool find though, even if it's not in great shape.

Its tough when a steel cent gets rusty like that, sorry about yours. Glad you found some better spots to search though.
