I finally realized I was holding my pencil wrong my whole life
So last week in art class, my teacher walked by and just watched me draw for a minute. Then she asked if my hand always cramps up after 20 minutes of sketching. I said yeah, how did she know? She showed me how I was gripping the pencil with my fingers all curled in, like a fist almost. She handed me a different grip where you hold it looser near the end, and after 10 minutes I could actually keep going without pain. Has anyone else had some basic thing they did wrong for years that someone just casually pointed out?
Oh man, you're honestly overthinking this. If it worked for decades and you weren't in pain, who cares? Now you'll be self conscious about it forever and probably draw worse just trying to remember the new grip.
Ryanm60 I used to have that same attitude about things like this. Then I tried fixing my terrible grip on a shovel after years of blisters and it actually made a huge difference. Sometimes a small change is worth it even if it feels weird at first.
