Just figured out the ending to The Village was stolen from a 1973 novel called Running Out of Time
I read Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix last week and it hits the exact same beats - isolated community, fake historical era, leader controlling people through medical lies. How did Shyamalan get away with this?

Yeah the "they made us believe the past was real" thing is wild because you see the same trick everywhere now. Look at those fake historical reenactment towns that tourists visit, they literally rewrite the history to make it seem nicer than it was. Or how companies use "nostalgia marketing" to sell you products from a time period that probably never existed. Even local news stations will do that thing where they pretend a neighborhood is stuck in the 1950s while ignoring the real problems people face there. The whole idea of controlling what people think is real is just a bigger version of what happens when someone cherry picks facts on social media to make you believe a certain story.

Do you think people actually know they're being fed a fake version of the past, or are most folks just going along with it because it's more comfortable than the truth?
