Had a guy at the diesel shop tell me my air intake was choking my engine
He said my stock box was pulling in hot air from the turbo and I was losing 20 horsepower, so I swapped to a cold air setup last weekend. Has anyone else seen a real mpg or power gain from changing intakes on a 7.3?

My 7.3 actually ran worse after I put a cone filter on it back in 2019. The stock intake pulls from the inner fender, not the turbo, so that shop guy was feeding you a line. On a hot day with that open element sucking underhood air, I watched my EGTs climb faster and my mpg dropped about 2 miles per gallon towing. The 7.3s are pretty forgiving but they like that cold, dense air from the factory setup. I swapped back to the stock box after three months and everything went back to normal. Did you see any real change in your transmission temps or just seat of the pants stuff?

Man I felt that in my bones... put a cone filter on my old 7.3 back in '16 and thought I was hot stuff till I saw my EGTs spike on a grade towing my camper. Felt real dumb pulling over to let it cool down while my buddy in his duramax just waved going by. @barbara_grant4 you're spot on about the underhood air thing, these trucks are basically giant hair dryers under there, mine would pull 30 degrees hotter intake temps just sitting at a light. Swapped to a 6637 setup with a heat shield and that helped some but I still miss the stock box on those 95 degree days...
