My aunt's holiday parties taught me to spot spice in reds
She always hosts big holiday meals. Picks bold red wines. I used to just drink them. Now I taste cinnamon and clove. Reminds me of her cooking. I write that in my notes. Others might miss those details.

Wonder how far you can take that. Can you pick out other baking spices like allspice or nutmeg in different reds now, or is it just cinnamon and clove? Has it made you actively look for wines with those notes, or do you just notice them when they're there?

Lol my wine note journey started and ended at "tastes like grape juice, but for adults." Okay but seriously, trying to pick out nutmeg sounds like a trap. Next thing you know you're telling people you get hints of weathered saddle leather and regret from a $15 cabernet.

Seriously though, how many people actually taste nutmeg versus just saying it because they read it on the card? @wrenn35 has a point about it becoming a hunt once you know the words, and that's how you end up with those weird leather and regret descriptions lmao. Does trying to spot the spices actually make the wine taste better, or does it just turn drinking into homework?
