Shoutout to the old guy at Lowe's who saved me $200 on a water heater install
I was staring at a $400 water heater at the store last Saturday, ready to buy one, when this older guy in the plumbing aisle just walked up and asked what I was doing. Turns out the one I picked was overkill for my 3-person household. He pointed me to a smaller 40-gallon model for $180 less that would do the same job (and fit my space better too). Has anyone else gotten random help from strangers at hardware stores that totally changed their project?

You ever walk into a store thinking you're a genius and leave realizing you're a total amateur? @mary_nelson71 probably knows the feeling, I sure do. That old guy saved me from hauling a useless tank back to the return line like some kind of clown.

Isn't it funny how the best advice comes from total strangers? I've been in that spot more times than I can count, especially at hardware stores where the employees are stretched thin. Those retired guys who hang around the aisles are a hidden treasure, honestly. They've got decades of real world screw-ups and fixes under their belts, so their tips are usually spot on. Good thing he came along before you hauled that big unit home, that would have been a pain to return.
